Dining for Women is a giving circle dedicated to transforming lives and eradicating poverty among women and girls all over the world. Through the power of collective giving, Dining for Women funds grassroots organizations that empower women and girls and promote gender equity. Each month, the thousands of (mostly) women in Dining for Womenchapters meet to share a meal and learn about the program that we are supporting. The programs generally focus on education, health and economic and environmental sustainability.
In February, we are supporting is called the Maji Safi Group in rural Tanzania. Maji Safi has built a long history of participatory engagement on community health issues. The specific initiative we’re supporting is aimed at keeping adolescent girls in school and encouraging leadership and building self-esteem. Its focus is on menstrual hygiene management, which is a major issue in many parts of the world and often creates barriers to girls attending school. https://diningforwomen.org/ programs/maji-safi-group/
There are three chapters of Dining for Women in Northwest Philadelphia. The “Thursday Chapter” meets the second Thursday of the month. We start with a potluck vegetarian dinner, then one of the chapter members presents the program we’re supporting. In February we’re meeting at Nexus thanks to John Autin and Diane Pierce.
Nexus co-workers and 520 residents are very welcome to join us. Since it’s a potluck, please bring something to share— if you’re moved to cook something vegetarian that would be great. Drinks (wine or non-alcoholic) are very welcome, as is bread and cheese, hummus, salsa and chips, cookies.
Dining for Women is a great organization that makes a real difference to the lives of women and girls. It’s an open group and Nexus is very welcome to join us. The meeting is on February 14 at 7 pm.
We encourage you to RSVP so we have an idea of how many people to expect. annmintz@mindspring.com Thank you.
